Can You Reuse an Existing Sign Cabinet Instead of Replacing the Entire Sign?
When it’s time to update your business’s signage, many owners assume they’ll need to replace the entire sign. In reality, that’s not always the case.
If your existing sign cabinet is still structurally sound, replacing only the sign face can often give you the appearance of a brand-new sign while saving time, reducing waste, and preserving unique architectural features.
That’s exactly the approach we took for Campground, a popular music venue and bar in Denver’s RiNo Arts District.
A Creative Solution Instead of a Complete Replacement
Campground’s existing exterior sign featured a custom scalloped-edge cabinet that had become part of the building’s character. While the venue was ready for a fresh new look, there was no reason to discard a cabinet that was still in excellent condition.
Rather than fabricating an entirely new sign, our team removed the existing sign face and designed a completely new illuminated face that fit seamlessly into the existing structure.
The result was a refreshed sign that looks completely custom while preserving one of the building’s most recognizable architectural elements.
What Is a Sign Face Replacement?
A sign face replacement involves removing the front panel of an existing illuminated sign cabinet and replacing it with a newly fabricated face that reflects your current branding.
Depending on the project, this can include:
- New graphics
- Updated logos
- Push-through acrylic lettering
- LED illumination
- Fresh paint and finishes
- Modern fabrication techniques
When the cabinet and electrical components remain in good condition, replacing only the face can be an excellent alternative to a complete sign replacement.
Benefits of Reusing an Existing Sign Cabinet
Preserve Architectural Character
Many older buildings feature custom sign cabinets that would be expensive—or impossible—to recreate today. Reusing these elements allows businesses to maintain the original personality of the building while updating their branding.
For Campground, the scalloped-edge cabinet helped define the building’s appearance. By keeping that distinctive shape, we maintained the character of the façade while giving the venue an entirely new visual identity.
Lower Project Costs
Fabricating a completely new illuminated cabinet typically requires more material, fabrication time, and installation labor.
When an existing cabinet can be reused, those costs are often reduced because much of the existing infrastructure remains in place.
Faster Installation
Since the cabinet is already mounted and positioned, installation is generally more efficient than replacing the entire sign assembly.
That means less disruption for your business and a quicker path to displaying your new branding.
Reduce Material Waste
Reusing existing components is also a more sustainable approach.
Instead of sending a large cabinet to a landfill, only the portions that require updating are replaced, extending the life of the existing sign while reducing unnecessary material waste.
The Campground Project

For this project, RiNo Sign Works fabricated a custom aluminum sign face featuring stencil-painted graphics and illuminated push-through acrylic letters.
Mounted within the existing circular cabinet, the new face completely transformed the appearance of the sign while working with the existing structure.
During the day, the bold graphics stand out against the venue’s colorful mural-covered exterior. At night, the illuminated lettering creates a welcoming focal point that draws attention without overpowering the artwork surrounding it.
The finished result feels like an entirely new sign—even though one of its most distinctive features was preserved.
Is Your Existing Sign Cabinet Worth Saving?
Not every sign can—or should—be retrofitted. Before recommending a sign face replacement, we evaluate several factors, including:
- Overall structural condition
- Cabinet integrity
- Existing electrical components
- Mounting system
- Compatibility with your new branding
If the existing structure is in good condition, a sign face replacement may be the most practical and cost-effective solution.
