University of Colorado Bio Lounge | Custom Wood Canopy

Architectural Fabrication, Custom Architectural Elements

Bringing an ambitious architectural concept to life requires more than traditional fabrication. For the University of Colorado’s Bio Lounge, RiNo Sign Works was tasked with transforming a complex wood canopy design into a fully engineered, custom-built architectural feature.

Originally conceptualized by RIOS, the canopy required extensive planning, precise modeling, and creative problem-solving to translate the design into a physical structure. Our team developed a detailed 3D model and carefully worked through the fabrication process, constructing the canopy piece by piece to achieve the intended design.

Precision Fabrication & Custom Woodwork

The canopy was fabricated using MDF with walnut veneer and carefully finished edge banding, creating a warm, natural wood appearance while accommodating the intricate geometry of the design.

Every component required careful consideration to ensure the individual pieces would come together as a cohesive architectural installation. The complexity of the canopy presented unique challenges throughout the modeling and fabrication process, requiring our team to develop practical solutions without compromising the original design intent.

Engineered for Structural Integrity

Beyond the visual complexity of the canopy, structural support was a critical component of the project. An engineered Unistrut framing system was incorporated into the installation to provide the necessary support and structural integrity.

Coordinating the structural framework with the custom-fabricated wood components was essential to bringing the finished canopy together successfully.

Bringing Architectural Concepts to Life

What began as a challenging design concept became a distinctive architectural feature within the University of Colorado’s Bio Lounge.

This project highlights the versatility of our team and our ability to take on highly specialized fabrication work that extends beyond conventional signage. From 3D modeling and material selection to custom fabrication and installation, we thrive on projects that demand precision, creativity, and technical problem-solving.
